The London Borough of Waltham Forest is located North of London City airport a distance of 11 miles that would take around 25 minutes by taxi via the A1020. It is located in northeast London and has a population of 259,700 according to 2011 statistics.
The borough was formed with the merging of Leyton, Walthamstow and Chingford local authorities. The history of the area can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon times where some primitive settlements once existed which is reflected in Chingford's Saxon name, Caegingford, or 'ford of the dwellers by the stumps'. The village of Walthamstowe was called Wacoumstou and mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, and it exists today as a conservation area in the modern town.
There are plenty of cultural and leisure activities in the area ranging from pubs, nightlife, restaurants and leisure centres. Some popular attractions include Walthamstowe Market, William Morris Gallery, The White Building and Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge. There are plenty of parks and open spaces available and the borough borders on Epping Forest.
